Animal and Environmental Biology
The Department of Animal and Environmental Biology was established as one of the foundation Departments of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko in 1999. Technological developments and other man’s activities within the last decade have resulted in substantial environmental degradation and significant impacts on the biota. This programme is in response to the understanding and tackling of the problems of these environmental changes and processes.
The programme encompasses the links between environmental factors and biota at a range of levels from molecules to ecosystems, and the application of this knowledge to challenges such as sustainable food production, biodiversity conservation and maintenance of ecosystem services. Students through industrial trainings and field trips would be exposed to mankind’s impact on the environment.

Our mission is to equip graduates with the skills needed to work in environmental management and pollution control agencies, oil companies, agricultural, fisheries and health establishments, tertiary institutions and research institutes. The blend of field-based and laboratory-based skills is designed to maximize breadth of employment.
The main objective of the programme is to produce graduates who have capacity to translate the knowledge acquired in the discipline of Environmental Biology and Fisheries to solving environmental issues and challenges in Fisheries. In order to achieve this aim, the courses to be offered in the Department are oriented towards solving practical problems, especially in the areas of Environmental degradation and conservation as well as Fisheries development.

The specific objectives of the programme are to:
(a) give students a sound knowledge of the principles of environmental processes and management;
(b) make students appreciate the nature and processes of pollution, microorganisms and the impact of these on human activities;
(c) equip students with suitable analytical and technical skills required for tackling problems of the environment and development; and
(d) prepare students for sustainable management of aquatic living resources.
PROGRAMME OFFERED AND DURATION B.Sc. (Honours) Environmental Biology and Fisheries The expected duration for the award of B.Sc. (Honours) degree in Environmental Biology and Fisheries shall be minimum of four (4) years (Eight Semesters) for students admitted through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (U.T.M.E) and three (3) years (Six semesters) for students admitted through Direct Entry.
