Microbiology
On behalf of the entire staff and students of the Department of Microbiology, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, it is my great pleasure and honour to welcome you to our Departmental page. We are a Department of 14 academic staff with 4 highly qualified senior members with good experience in teaching and expertise in conducting research in Environmental/Agricultural, Food & Industrial and Medical Microbiology. Each year we have 1-2 eminent Professors on sabbatical that always strengthen and add value to our academic program. Eight of our lecturers are pursuing their Ph. D in Nigeria, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Members of staff are well published, and they update themselves and improve their collaboration by attending yearly international conferences. Many have achieved international recognitions for their research accomplishments, and are the recipients of awards and honours.
The Department is well-equipped with modern equipment and well trained Technologists, and it enjoys consistent full accreditation status by the National Universities Commission. The Department of Microbiology is proud to say that we have the highest undergraduate and postgraduate students’ enrolment in Faculty of Science. We are also one of the first to graduate a postgraduate student, and since the inception of the Department, we have maintained our reputation as one of the best programs. We also organise workshops, industrial training and excursions to relevant establishments.
As scientific investigators, we are actively engaged in innovative research and discovery, as well as in training the next generation of researchers through our M. Sc and Ph. D graduate programs.The graduate studies aims to offer intensive training to intending specialists in Microbiology, and also to contribute to the production of high-level manpower and research personnel. It is designed to meet the increasing demand for specialists in various fields of Microbiology, particularly in Agriculture, Medicine, Industry and Environment.Our research activities are supported by local research grant, Tertiary Education Trust Funds and international grants/fellowships. The Department’s interdisciplinary research is complemented by interactions with students and staff in other Departments in the Faculties of Science and Agriculture.
