Linguistics and Languages
HOD’s Welcome Message
You are welcome to the Department of Linguistics & Languages, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria. The Department is concerned with the linguistics and literatures of the languages spoken in the country other than English and Arabic. And this is rightly so, as the University housing it is located in Akoko, Ondo State, where a multiplicity of small and highly endangered indigenous languages are spoken. For the Department, language is seen as a universal phenomenon that manifests itself in superficially differing ways in different human communities. Linguistics, which is the science of language, quite rightly takes it that each human language is unique, as it displays both universal and language-specific properties. All such properties and features are susceptible of discovery and explanation using techniques and procedures hallowed by time and practice.
The Department runs three degree programmes, namely, B.A. Linguistics (single Honours), B.A. Yoruba (Single Honours), and B.A. Linguistics/Yoruba (combined Honours). These programmes are aimed at developing individuals with scientifically critical but creative minds, who will be change agents in actualizing the UNESCO goal of national development through the use of local language resources. The UNESCO and other informed agencies and individual believe that Languages, indeed any language including Yoruba, is, apart from being a unique means of communication, a storehouse of the received knowledge, wisdom, and values of the people that speak it, is also a symbol of national and cultural identity. For this reason, language especially our indigenous languages are precious cultural resources that deserve in their own right to be preserved, promoted, and propagated.
