Admission Requirements for Plant Science and Biotechnology
PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES .
The objectives of the Plant Science and Biotechnology programme are to equip intending graduates with a thorough knowledge of modern theoretical and practical Plant Science and related disciplines, and to also introduce them to further work in several areas of general and applied Botany. With that, our B.Sc. graduate in Plant Science & Biotechnology will be sufficiently prepared specialized postgraduate training or for general work in related areas of human endeavour. Each student is assigned to a departmental adviser who counsels and guides him in the selection of related sets of courses best suited to his capabilities and interests.
PROGRAMME OFFERED
B.Sc. (Hons) Plant Science and Biotechnology
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS A candidate for admission to the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology must have at least five credits at the S.S.C.E/G.C.E. ‘O’ level, NECO, or its equivalent at no more than two sittings in the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, English Language and Physics. The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) subjects are Biology, Chemistry and any other science subject. Direct Entry requirements are two “A” level passes in Biology/Botany/Zoology and Chemistry or Physics, while ND with at least upper credit in relevant areas in addition to UTME requirements may also be considered.
Candidates with satisfactory performance in the University’s Pre-degree Science programme are also eligible for admission.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AWARD OF DEGREE
The minimum requirement for the award of the B.Sc degree in Plant Science and Biotechnology for UTME candidates is satisfactory completion of not less than 144 units of course work consisting of:
GST Courses – 11 units
Elective courses – 10 units
Compulsory courses – 123 units
Total – 144 units
Direct entry candidates are required to satisfactorily complete a minimum of 108 units. A student must register for a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 28 credit units each semester.
REGISTRATION FOR COURSES
The following terminologies approved by Senate shall apply to the different categories of courses. Compulsory Courses: Specified Departmental courses which students must take and pass in order to graduate
Required Courses: University or Faculty courses, which students must take and pass before they can graduate
Elective Courses: These are courses within or outside the Faculty which students should take to obtain the minimum number of units required for graduation.
Pre-requisite Courses: These are courses in which students must score at least 35% to be able to register for designated follow-up courses.
EXAMINATIONS AND GRADING SYSTEM.
(i) Every course shall normally be examined at the end of the semester in which it is offered.
(ii) There is provision for continuous assessment constituting 30% of the total score in a course which shall take the form of tests, practicals, written assignments, or other appropriate assessment methods during the semester. (iii) The final grade in a course shall be based on a maximum of 100 marks (including 30 for continuous assessment).
(iv) The final scores in each course shall be assigned appropriate letter grades as follows:

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
(i) To be eligible for the award of the B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in Plant Science and Biotechnology, a student must have successfully completed all prescribed courses as listed in item 5.
(ii) The final award and class of degree shall be based on the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) as follows:

4.50-5.00 1st CLASS (HONS)
3.50-4.49 2nd CLASS (HONS) UPPER DIVISION
2.40-3.49 2nd CLASS (HONS) LOWER DIVISION
1.50-2.39 3rd CLASS (HONS)
1.00-1.49 PASS
<1.00 FAIL WITHDRAWAL OF STUDENTS Any student whose cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is less than 1.00 at the end of two consecutive semesters shall be placed on initial probation (P1) and final probation (P2) in the succeeding semesters. A student who at the end of the probation period fails to obtain a CGPA of at least 1.00 shall be issued a Warning. After four consecutive semesters of obtaining a CGPA of less than 1.00, the student will be asked to withdraw from the department. Each student in the above category shall be duly informed of his/her status in writing after the approval of results by Senate.
